Youth SSP Trip to San Diego – June 29 to July 5

What in the World is Sierra Service Project (SSP)?

Follow our youth as they serve, learn, and grow in San Diego’s South Bay volunteering with SSP!

On June 29, 8 members of our youth group and 2 of our leaders met at 6am to travel for their mission trip in San Diego, California. From June 20- July 5, 2025, they will be volunteering with SSP doing community projects. They’ll be gathering in the evenings for spiritual program, eating dinners, and sleeping on the floors of their host church. Please pray for them as they serve the community and do God’s work.

Sierra Service Project (SSP) is a long-standing mission organization that provides meaningful service-learning experiences for youth and young adults. Rooted in the values of justice, compassion, and community, SSP creates opportunities for volunteers to serve through home repair and community-based projects. These repairs help historically underserved residents—especially elders—remain safely in their homes, while also allowing young people to grow in faith, skill, and purpose.

Since its founding in 1975 by United Methodist ministers, SSP has partnered with more than forty Indigenous communities, as well as rural and urban neighborhoods across the Western United States. This summer, SSP will continue its work in San Diego’s South Bay, a diverse region near the U.S.-Mexico border. There, they will focus on the intersection of immigration, economic disparity, and environmental justice, partnering with local churches, city governments, and community organizations to meet real, pressing needs.

Many residents in South Bay face housing and food insecurity and often cannot afford critical home repairs. Volunteers from SSP will help address these issues while learning about the region’s challenges, including the environmental impacts on the Tijuana River estuary and cross-border communities. As a congregation, we are proud to support this mission of hope and transformation that equips young people to be agents of justice and healing in the world.
