Current Missions Opportunities

This past Mother’s Day, hundreds of women received a surprise gift of hope during their time of crisis thanks to all of you and the tremendous response to our Mother’s Day Purse & Cosmetic drive. Missions were also able to deliver diapers to the children of Child Crisis Center as well as food to Gilbert Open Arms – thank you for being such a generous congregation!

This month we opened our hearts to elderly men in an East Valley senior center and the ECH Justa Center. In adopting them for Father’s Day, we provided lap blankets and gifts for almost 100 "grandfathers". The Ecumenical Chaplaincy for the Homeless (ECH) Justa Center serves as a daytime refuge for homeless senior citizens serving more than 100 each day. More information can be found at www.azhomeless.org. Thank you so much for your care and such wonderfully wrapped gifts!

Coming in July, Missions will be handing out our Fishes & Loaves bags to gather special food items for the Mesa La Mesita homeless shelter and help fill a dwindling pantry in the hot summer months. Keep bringing in your travel sizes of shampoo, lotions; etc for the Youth groups will be putting together these in quart size bags for use at UMOM's domestic violence shelters.

Mark your calendars in October as we plan for return trips to Esperanza Orphanage in Rocky Point and to New Orleans in October.

For those who would like to know more or help Gilbert’s sister City Leshan, China deal with the massive earthquake, you can turn to contact Greg Tilque at 480-503-6865. Tax-deductible donations to the fund can be made now at any Wells Fargo bank branch by referencing the “Gilbert Sister Cities – Leshan Earthquake Relief Fund.

UMOM needs professional clothing preferably larger sizes for their Dress for Success program assisting with employment. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, UMOM has something for every age including teens to assist with their Teen Activities Program or children in their Art program or Kid’s Den. Contact UMOM volunteer coordinator, at 602-889-0859.

Missions work throughout the year

As United Methodists, we believe that faith needs to express itself through action. Our church is regularly involved in a broad range of mission activities, as we have sought to express the good news and love of Jesus Christ around our community. Our many different campaigns include:

The Homeless Community

  • Several times a month, our church serves dinner to men, women, and children at both UMOM’s overflow shelters, the Justa Center and the Watkins facility.
  • In 2006, our church provided breakfasts and lunches for approximately 70 families at the Justa Center for four months.
  • Over 150 backpacks have been purchased and filled with personal toiletries donated by our congregation for families at the Justa Center .
  • Groups from our church visit the Justa Center several times a month to play with the homeless children.

Children in our community

  • Children who attend Sidewalk Sunday School receive Easter baskets, which are loaded with candy and toys to celebrate this most holy day.
  • Every fall, church members fill backpacks with new school supplies for low-income students at Gilbert Elementary.
  • Foster Angels of Arizona Serving Together (FAAST) provides names and Christmas wish lists for over 100 foster children, and our church generously grants those wishes.
  • Our congregation participates in Operation Christmas Child, and wrapped shoeboxes of joy and hope are shipped all over the world.

Women and families in crisis

  • More than 100 needy families in our community receive boxes filled with all the trimmings for Thanksgiving dinner.
  • Battered women receive purses and cosmetics from our congregation for Shoebox Ministry’s Mother’s Day program.
  • Carloads of diapers are donated for UMOM, as well as the East Valley Child Crisis Center .

Neighbors in need

  • Through the annual Rock-n-Roll Paint-a-Thon each October, 25 members of our church paint the home of a low-income family.
  • Our church members regularly participate in building homes for Habitat for Humanity.
  • Food drives are held all year long to benefit Gilbert Open Arms food bank.

The Missions Committee meets the third Sunday of every month at 11:00 a.m. in Room 212. We welcome anyone who wishes to reach out to others in the community.
