Jesus Is Coming in Humility

I had an interesting conversation with some friends recently.  Actually, we meet each week to discuss a book we are reading, but more importantly we discuss and share the struggles and joys we experience as men trying to be faithful followers of Jesus.  Our subject matter was "God loves us- no matter what, right?" which led to a discussion of the image of God in the Old Testament verses the image of God in the New Testament.  Let me explain.

The picture of God in the Old Testament appears to us, anyway, as a remote, distant God who seeks justice, and often retribution.  God does not seem to be seeking much of a personal relationship here.  On the other hand, the New Testament tells the story of God coming to us in the likeness of a human being, seeking a personal, intimate relationship with His creation.  We call him, Jesus.  He is God, yet He is so human in every way.

As we began Advent last week we celebrated that God comes to us in power.  This week we are celebrating that God comes to us in humility.  He comes to us as servant of all- One who cries, who laughs, who knows pain, who knows joy... I believe for us to finally know God, to trust Him, and to accept what He wants for each of us, God had to come in a very humble state so we would truly know and experience God's everlasting love for ourselves.  Yes, He's coming to you and me once again in humility!
